Back Pain Questions & Answers
What causes back pain?
Back pain becomes more common with age and can affect individuals who work desk jobs as well as those with physically demanding occupations. Stress on the spine is one of the most frequent reasons people miss work. Common causes of back pain include:
Herniated disc
Intervertebral discs have a firm outer layer and a soft inner center. When the outer layer weakens or cracks, the inner portion may protrude and irritate nearby nerves, leading to inflammation and back pain.
Muscle strain
Muscle strains may occur from sudden movements, overuse, or poor mechanics. While many strains heal on their own, some do not heal properly, leading to chronic back pain.
Sciatica
The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and down the legs. Compression or irritation of this nerve can cause low back pain, often accompanied by numbness, tingling, or pain radiating down one leg.
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that causes joint inflammation and cartilage breakdown. When arthritis affects the spine, the joints may rub together, resulting in stiffness and chronic back pain.
Poor posture
Prolonged sitting, repetitive lifting, or poor workstation ergonomics can strain the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine, contributing to back pain over time.
How is back pain diagnosed?
Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. During your visit, Dr. Barbara Adonis, DC, and Heather Previll, PT, DPT, will review your medical history and discuss your symptoms, including when the pain began, where it is located, and what activities affect it.
A comprehensive physical examination will be performed to assess posture, movement, strength, and neurological function. If needed, diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may be ordered to identify the underlying cause of your back pain.
